Additions to the Digital Archive - Spring 2026
Significant additions to the Digital Archive have been made available to the public.
The newly available publications are all of historical interest; the three Danish Brotherhood Society magazines are of special interest to genealogists and academic researchers.
These can be found in the Repository -> Library section.
- In the area titled Filed by Dewey Decimal Numbering:
- Danes In America by P. S. Vig. This is the 1899 version (entirely written by Vig) that was taken up by C. Rasmussen Publishing and greatly expanded into two volumes published in 1908 and 1916. This 1899 version is online in the original Danish and in an English translation. We are working on English translations for both of the later volumes, as well.
- Twenty-five Years - a celebration of twenty-five years of the UDELC in 1921 (Femogtyve et festkrift 1921) is available under its Danish title and in English.
- Under Danish Language Publications:
- Det Danske Brodersamfunds Blad, the original monthly newsletter/magazine published by the Danish Brotherhood Society for its members was published from February, 1916, through 1940.
- Under Periodicals:
- Danish Brotherhood Magazine, the first continuation of Det Danske Brodersamfunds Blad was published from 1941 through March of 1972.
- American Dane, the second and final continuation of Det Danske Brodersamfunds Blad was published from April 1973 through September 1995 when the Danish Brotherhood Society was acquired by Woodmen of the World. (Soon to be completed.)
The three Danish Brotherhood Magazines can be found as one continuous series in the Collections portion of the site.
In addition, several collections of oral histories are now online in the Digital Archive. These are:
- ORA-990 Oral History Recordings in Repository -> Archive -> Collections in the Stacks. These are digitizations of interviews conducted in the 1970s-1980s by Niel Johnson. They deal principally with the history of Dana College, Blair NE and Washington County NE, especially including Danish immigrants in the area.
- PET-976 Dana History Recordings in Repository -> Archive -> Collections in the Stacks. These recordings were used by Pete Petersen in writing his book, A Place Called Dana. Some of the interviews were recorded by him on cassette tapes; some are taken from the ORA-990 collection mentioned above.
- Ribbons of Memories in Repository -> Special Collections. This collection was created by Edward and Gerda Sundberg and gifted by them to the University of Washington and the Danish Archives in Aalborg, Denmark. Dana College obtained a copy from the Sundbergs by deed of gift in 1978.
