920.0489 D23 Danske i Amerika (1907, 1916)

This work consists of two volumes. Volume I is comprised of two parts: "The Old Times" dealing with the exploration of America by Scandinavians and immigration of Danes to the United States, mostly written by P. S. Vig; and "The Life and Work of Danish Americans in Various Fields" by numerous contributing authors. Volume II, also by a large number of writers, consists mainly of discussions of the settlement of Danes in various states, cities and regions of the United States.

When English translation of these book began in the late 1990s, the plan was to consolidate sections dealing with specific topics or locations, particularly individual states of the United States. The result was two volumes provided here in PDF format, "Kansas and Nebraska" and "Danish American Lutheranism 1860-1908." 

Although a significant portion of the original Danish volumes was translated over several years, most of this was hardwritten on legal pads that have lain mostly untouched for the past twenty-some years awaiting transcription into a form that could be published. The project has been taken up again with the intent of eventually making the full text of both volumes freely available for non-commercial purposes.

As work progresses, we plan to publish on this site the individual sections of each volume as each one is finished. Once all of the text has been translated and published here, we hope to recombine the parts to match their organization in the original Danish volumes.
