VIG-996 Vig Family Collection

Included are the papers of (Lars) Einar Vig, who documented citizens of Washington County NE and the surrounding area from before statehood (1867) into the 1970s. These papers split among numerous boxes, and the files here are arranged in complete sub-collections that sometimes span more than one box in the stacks. Lists of the papers and their location in the boxes are provided to allow quick retrieval of the original paper, if necessary.
Einar Vig Papers (contents and guide 1986).pdf

This guide was written in 1986 following the organization of Einar Vig's papers by members of the Washington County (Nebraska) Historical Society. Although some of the content is out-dated, it remains useful in understanding Vig's method of recording information.

Pioneer Families - Washington County, Nebraska

Entries are listed in alphabetical order by name of the head-of-household. Only that name is searchable at this time, but the images generally include names of parents, spouse(s) and children. Other relatives may also be mentioned. Many images also include references to local (Washington County) newspaper articles dealing with the head-of-household or specific family members.

Danish Families in Washington County, Nebraska

These are "family sheets" for Danish families in Washington County NE (and vicinity). They are in order according to the name of the head-of-household. Einar Vig used an internal indexing system in this part of the collection. Each head of family was assigned a number, which appears at the top of that person's first page. This number is used as a reference in the pages of other persons. For this reason, the files here are titled using both the individual's name and the number assigned by EV. Example: "Aabel, Paul - 1"

Box 4

Box 4 contains a wide variety of small collections: church records, school attendance lists, naturalization dates, Danish Brotherhood membership, members of the GAR (Grand Army of the Republic, a fraternal order of Union soldiers) and more.

Box 5

A large portion of Box 5 is occupied by Einar Vig's transcriptions of the US Census records for Washington County from 1860, 1870 and 1880. These are not online here, since scans of the actual records are freely available elsewhere on the internet (familysearch.org is one location where the data is thoroughly indexed as well).
